The apprenticeship is designed to prepare participants for professional training work and further independent certification. No previous dog-training experience is required; teaching is adjusted to each participant's starting point.

Meet the instructor
Tristan Flynn
Tristan is a Jollytails co-founder, dog trainer, and behaviour educator. His background includes dog training, behaviour consultations, seminars, media appearances, and professional education. Before Jollytails, he operated Golden Rule Training and taught adult and puppy classes in the Halifax area.
Four-part structure
From learning theory to leading a class
- Lectures and discussion. Learning theory, canine communication, the training landscape, aggression and behaviour plans, off-leash play, impulse control, leash skills, reactivity, and the risks and limitations of punishment-based methods.
- Structured study. Assigned books and videos reinforce the classroom material and support preparation for independent certification exams.
- Private training in case studies. One-to-one practice, observation, and participation in private or in-home case studies.
- Group-class experience. Shadow two six-week courses, assist with two more, and then develop the confidence to lead classes under guidance.
Tuition and location
A focused twelve-week commitment
Tuition is $2,500 plus HST, paid in stages, and required books cost approximately $500. Training takes place at 40 Joseph Zatzman Drive in Dartmouth.
